Mike was not just the owner of the Red Wings, he was also an entrepreneur. In 1959 he invested his life savings, with his friend, into Little Ceases. Somehow he new what to invest in, and had a really good instinct.
Going back to the Red Wings, he wasn't all about the headlines, and validating his status as the owner. He was a man of his players. He didn't just sign the checks. They players could talk to him. When they wanted to part or come in to the team, they would talk to Ilitch. He made them feel comfortable to talk to him. But at the same time, loyalty mattered. He loved his team, and he wasn't just in it for the money. Ilitch was a family man, he had only 1 wife with 7 kids. Everything he built, his family still owns to this day. It is refreshing to see a billionaire not only in it for the money, he loved what he did and it showed. He didn't want the women, the drugs or any of that. From what I've read about Mike Ilitch, I respect the man, and am saddened by his death.
